In their first year, babies are exposed to a series of complications that their immune system is not yet used to fighting against, therefore, their defenses are quite fragile. Let’s get to know some of them.
1. Respiratory infections. These can affect the upper airways and are a common illness in them, although mild. If the child suffers from it, they will feel uncomfortable due to nasal congestion and cough, they may also lose some appetite. It can improve with nasal washes and ambient humidity. However, if the illness affects the lower airways, it is a more serious problem and could even be bronchiolitis, which may require specific hospital treatment. A more distant but not impossible possibility is pneumonia, which is bacterial in origin, and in these cases, antibiotic treatment is required.
2. Otitis. Otitis, of infectious origin, are quite frequent. They are generally bacterial and can develop as a complication of a cold in the upper airways; depending on the child’s age, it may resolve well without antibiotics, although sometimes they are necessary. In the first year, if antibiotics are needed, they are generally painful and uncomfortable, making swallowing difficult because of ear pain.
3. Gastroenteritis. These are very common and have a viral origin and have no specific treatment. However, constant oral hydration is important, and sometimes vomiting, diarrhea, or both can occur.
4. Urinary infections. These can be ruled out or confirmed by a test strip. Once the cause is studied, if positive, the corresponding antibiotic treatment will be administered. Depending on the severity of the infection, hospital care may or may not be required.
5. Skin infections. These usually require antibiotic treatment, either oral or topical depending on the case, or in severe cases, hospital admission. Some infections like exanthematous diseases (chickenpox, measles, rubella, among others) are viral in origin and usually do not require antibiotic treatment unless there are signs of superinfection or complications.
