Believe it or not, fear of bathing is very common in little ones. Here are some tips to help your child overcome this phobia in the best way.
1. You can’t prevent a child from being afraid, so give up trying to put them in the bathtub and instead wash them only with a damp cloth.
2. Put yourself in their shoes; even if their fear doesn’t seem reasonable, you should ask yourself if your own fears are “reasonable” and how you would feel if you were forced to face the things that scare you. For example, do you like big spiders? If not, how would you feel if someone made you hold one?
3. It’s helpful to tell your child when there is (really) nothing to fear, but it’s not helpful to tell them not to be scared. Saying, “The bathtub is perfectly safe, but I can see it scares you, so let’s use the sink for now,” shows your child you’re on their side and offers reassurance and support.
4. Remember that most children’s fears are temporary, especially if handled with care. You might quickly overcome this fear by providing lots of water fun that has nothing to do with bathing and baths.
