Breastfeeding is the natural and proper way for the human species to feed infants and young children, but how much do you know about it?
How to store it?
Expressed milk can be kept for 4 to 8 hours outside the refrigerator at room temperature in a cool place. It is recommended to keep it in the refrigerator for no more than 48 hours. In the freezer, it can be stored between 3 and 6 months.
It is advisable to divide it into small amounts (60 to 120 ml) and preferably in breast milk collection bags or sterilized containers with airtight seals.
It is not recommended to use containers bought for urine analysis, sterilized for urine cultures, because they are generally sterilized with a chemical substance: ethylene oxide.
Glass or hard plastic containers with airtight lids (boiled and clean), jars (steam sterilized), or specially designed bags for breast milk storage can be used, leaving 3 centimeters of free space in the container.
Jars with metal lids are not recommended because they cannot be steam-sterilized or boiled as they rust.
Tips
- For successful breastfeeding, it is important to ensure that the baby latches well onto the breast so they can empty it and increase milk production. Also, increasing the frequency of feedings will adjust production to meet the baby's needs.
- Observe the baby while nursing because poor latch (mouth-breast adhesion) prevents the baby from properly stimulating the breast. Also, check that the baby latches onto the whole nipple and part of the areola, so they can efficiently empty the breasts and thus increase milk production.
- Increase daily feedings: the frequency of nursing (at least 8 to 12 feedings every 24 hours) will automatically adjust production to meet the baby's needs.
- Do not take vitamins prescribed for the prenatal period, as they are not suitable for breastfeeding and may decrease milk production.
- Try to rest as much as possible: ideally a nap, or 20 minutes of relaxation during the day.
- Drink plenty of fluids: 2 or 3 liters per day of water, juices, broths, milk, etc., avoiding excessive tea, coffee, mate, or soda.
- Consume up to 6 brewer's yeast tablets (available over the counter in health food stores and pharmacies) or 1,200 grams of brewer's yeast divided among meals.
